My Life

Rarely in our lives' journeys do we travel major highways as much as we plot our course to do so. Our feet tend to fall on obscure and crooked paths with rocks and fallen branches, crossed by streams and alternate trails. For me, it was a stint in seminary followed by a switch to an MFA program and 25 years work as a professional artist. The path curved to public radio and writing. The trail led me to Yoga, a Yoga studio and writing about Yoga. Now this yogic path has led me to the Northwest of the Northwest, Bellingham, Washington. To many this path may look like a series of short tracks and missteps in differing directions. I, however, know it is actually one path. It is my path.

My resume states the experience of a writer, an artist, a critic, a producer and announcer for an NPR affiliate, a business owner, a yoga teacher and side jobs that support these callings. What a resume does not reveal is the soul's path, not pressured to present an image or compelled to secure a place in society.

In 1976 I attended Vanderbilt Divinity School. I had just completed a BA in Religion and Philosophy at Birmingham-Southern College. My original plan to enter the ministry had changed to a more academic track for which I was to switch to a MA program in Theology. That did not occur, but my odyssey continued. It still does.

I left Divinity School to pursue a career in art. That led me to Athens, Georgia, where I earned a Masters of Fine Arts degree from the University of Georgia. I painted for two decades showing throughout the southeastern United States. At first, I purposely avoided using symbols of religious or political significance. My intent was to extract meaning from the work, not implant them. In the late 1980's the work altered course and exploded with a bountiful palette of color and symbols from religious and literary traditions throughout the world. I found that it was time to explore what I believed spiritually. These years of my life as an artist were full and exciting. The road ahead was clear. Life has different plans, however. I continued to paint and show, but another chapter was in the writing.

In the mid 1990's I began the practice of Yoga. Hatha Yoga gave me the opportunity to move deeply within while toning the body and mind. In 1998 I trained at the Satchidananda Ashram to be a Yoga teacher. I returned in 1999 for intermediate training and 2000 for advanced.

I do not know what my life would have been had I not found Yoga. It actually feels as if Yoga found me. Through Yoga I have come to understand myself very well. I have come to see how I, in a reactive state, create a false sense of who I am, because being truly free is a frightening notion. The power we gain from being free is coupled with great responsibility. Along with Hatha Yoga I teach and lead workshops on The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the basic text of classical Yoga. I also, present workshops on Partner Yoga which opens us to trust and a true connection with others.

Currently, my path pauses in Bellingham. I have come to trust these roadways as they have, in the past, led me time and again to a fuller life. I look forward to working with you on your journey.
